A physician can specialize in a certain field in medicine that deals with infectious diseases and can work as an infectious disease specialist. This specialty takes care of finding out what organism or toxin caused a certain infection and institute treatment procedures to eradicate the cause of this disease and manage its symptoms. Diseases of this kind could vary in nature, including bacterial, viral and fungal.
A specialty in infectious medicine is thought to be a subspecialty under internal medicine. However, it could also be a subspecialty under pediatrics. It covers any infectious diseases that could infect any part of the human body.
