Dr. Kalvaria earned his medical degree from the University of Rhodesia in Harare, Zimbabwe. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine and a residency in Gastroenterology at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa. He also completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He is double board certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine,  specializing in all disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, including the liver and biliary tract.  After moving to the United States in 1986, he served as Assistant Professor of Medicine in Gastroenterology at the University of Florida, prior to joining private practices in Melbourne, FL and then Sarasota, FL.    He has held the position of adjunct Professor of Gastroenterology at Florida State University. He has also served as chairman of the Department of Medicine at Sarasota Memorial Hospital as well as President of the Florida Gastroenterologic Society.   Dr. Kalvaria’s research interests have included irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disorders, acid reflux and fatty liver disease. He has participated in a number of clinical trials and authored numerous research publications. After 30 years in private practice, Dr. Kalvaria has retired from active practice. He currently does second opinions by tele-medicine and also works as Gastroenterology consultant in the Specialty Community Clinic at Sarasota Memorial Hospital treating indigent patients with gastrointestinal problems.   He has developed an interest in Functional Medicine and recently completed a course “Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice” through the Institute for Functional Medicine.  His present interests include public education in disorders of the gastrointestinal system.
