Gastroenterology is a branch of medicine that specifically deals with disorders concerning the digestive system. It literally means the “study of the stomach and the intestines” in Greek.
The focus of this specialty includes diseases involving the mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, rectum and the anus. It encompasses the whole medical approach to these diseases such as the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
Some of the most common disorders handled by gastroenterologists include acid reflux, peptic ulcers and diarrhea, among others. Even though the primary illness of a person stems from other places aside from the digestive system, this discipline may come into the picture when complications involving the gut arise.
