Endocrinology

Endocrinology is a specialty in medicine that studies the different endocrine structures and the hormones that they secrete. It specifically involves the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases associated with the impairment of the functions of these structures or with the hormones themselves. When the word is broken into its Greek parts, it literally translates to “within” (endon), “separate” (krinein) and “reason” (logos).

Since the endocrine system involves a lot of separate organs and tissues, as well as a vast diversity of hormones, endocrinology is a rather complex field. Examples of the disorders treated by this specialty are diabetes and hyperthyroidism.
