Rochelle Flynn, M.D. worked in pediatric emergency departments for about 12 years before deciding to leave the stress of overnight shifts in order to have more time with her two young children and more continuity with her patients. She views “the best part of pediatrics” as “taking time to educate” parents and patients about various subjects including myths about fever and safe symptomatic care for “the common cold” and other childhood ailments. She has experience evaluating physical and sexual abuse, testifying in court, and treating “adolescent/young adult” patients up to 23 years old. She considers no topic to be “off limits” and is “fearless” when it comes to discussing numerous topics specific to this population such as safe sexual practices, sexual identity, contraception, depression, drug use, and the HPV “genital wart” prevention vaccine. Dr. Flynn describes her approach as straight-up and honest, “matter-of-fact but with a mix of humor to lighten up some of the seriousness of the subjects” and is comfortable having discussions with parents or adolescents alike. She strongly encourages her older patients and parents/guardians of younger patients to become “partners” in their own medical care and mental health care. Other special interests include Autism Spectrum Disorder (including the former diagnosis of “Asperger’s syndrome) and ADHD.
