Medical Genetics

Medical genetics is a field in the medical science that studies the human genome and deals with the abnormalities associated with it. It comprises of the diagnosis and management of diseases that are inherited from one generation to the other. It is basically the application of information gathered from genetics in human medicine.

Medical genetics encompasses the whole discipline of managing genetic diseases including the practice of physicians, counselors and nutritionists. This should not be confused with genetic medicine which covers the performance of medical treatments that manage hereditary disorders such as gene therapy and predictive medicine.

Many advances in genetic research has allowed medical genetics to successfully deal with a number of previously unmanageable hereditary disorders.
