Geriatric medicine is a branch of medicine that studies the internal and external environments of people coming from the older population. It comprises the promotion of health, prevention of diseases, and the diagnosis and treatment of diseases that are commonly associated with age. It is otherwise called as medical gerontology.
Geriatrics differ from the adult medicine in so many aspects. For one, it takes into consideration the physical and psychological changes associated with aging in the treatment of illnesses. It has many subspecialties including cardiogeriatrics, geriatric nephrology, geriatric neurology and other specialties that specifically handles diseases commonly related to aging.
